Structural Steel Fabrication Inspector
Job Type: Contract-to-Hire
Shift: First Shift
Starting Pay: Up to $32.00 per hour (compensation is based on experience)
Position Overview
We are looking for a Structural Steel Fabrication Inspector to help ensure fabricated products meet quality expectations throughout the manufacturing process. This hands-on position involves inspecting structural steel components, welds, coatings, and raw materials while verifying compliance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, and industry standards.
The ideal candidate has a background in structural steel fabrication, understands welding codes, and is committed to maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Primary Responsibilities
- Inspect structural steel components throughout fabrication to verify quality and workmanship.
- Confirm compliance with project specifications and applicable standards, including AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, and AISC requirements.
- Examine incoming materials, parts, and consumables to ensure they meet required specifications.
- Record inspection findings and maintain accurate quality reports and documentation.
- Identify, label, and track inspected materials in accordance with established quality procedures.
- Calibrate and maintain welding equipment along with inspection and measuring tools.
- Support welder qualification and certification activities.
- Assist with training related to welding practices, fitting procedures, inspection methods, and quality requirements.
- Maintain drawing control and support documentation used throughout the quality process.
- Work closely with production personnel and leadership to investigate quality concerns and improve manufacturing processes.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts while promoting a safe work environment.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of experience in structural steel fabrication.
- Previous experience in quality control, quality assurance, inspection, or a similar manufacturing role.
- Working knowledge of AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, and AISC standards.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and project specifications.
- Experience using quality inspection equipment, including:
- Fillet weld gauges
- V-WAC gauges
- Squares
- Tape measures
- Standard welding and fabrication inspection tools
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality, accuracy, and workplace safety.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- Experience performing or assisting with Nondestructive Testing (NDT), including:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Additional certifications related to structural steel fabrication, welding inspection, bolting, or protective coatings.
- Previous experience in a structural steel fabrication or manufacturing environment.
Work Environment
- Primarily a shop-floor role with limited office responsibilities.
- Manufacturing environment with varying temperatures.
- Frequent standing, walking, and performing inspections throughout the workday.
