Salary Range$36,122 - $46,609 annually. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications.This position is Non-Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime provisions.

Summary

The Custodian II – Custodial Lead provides comprehensive cleaning, sanitation, and facility support services across a wide range of campus environments, including academic buildings, research laboratories, offices, student centers, dining facilities, and high-traffic public spaces. This position ensures all areas are safe, clean, and well-maintained to support teaching, research, student engagement, and campus life. The role supports both routine operations and campus events, delivering responsive, high-quality service in dynamic, high-use environments. As a work lead, the position assists with coordinating daily assignments, monitoring service quality, and supporting staff training. This role requires independent judgment to prioritize work across diverse facility types while adhering to established custodial, safety, and sustainability standards.

Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Custodial Operations & Facility Maintenance – 75%

    • Perform comprehensive cleaning and sanitation of diverse campus facilities, including classrooms, research laboratories, offices, student centers, dining facilities, recreation areas, and public gathering spaces.

    • Maintain restrooms, instructional spaces, lab environments, food service areas, and high-traffic common spaces with attention to sanitation, safety, and presentation standards.

    • Execute both routine and rapid-response cleaning to address spills, high occupancy impacts, laboratory requirements, and customer service needs in real time.

    • Clean and maintain floors, fixtures, furnishings, windows, and specialized surfaces using established methods and APPA-aligned standards.

    • Remove waste and recycling materials, including high-volume disposal needs in dining, lab, and event environments.

    • Replenish custodial, sanitation, and consumable supplies to ensure uninterrupted service across varied building types.

    • Identify and report maintenance, safety, or environmental concerns, particularly in specialized spaces such as labs and high-use facilities.

    • Utilize CMMS (TMA) and departmental systems to manage assignments, document work, and support operational reporting.

    • Apply sustainable practices and ensure proper chemical handling in alignment with safety standards, including considerations for lab and dining environments.

    • Independently prioritize work based on building schedules, research activity, events, and customer demand across multiple facility types.

  • Event Support, Work Leadership & Team Coordination– 20%

    • Prepare, maintain, and restore spaces for campus events across academic and non-academic facilities, including classrooms, auditoriums, student centers, and dining/event venues.

    • Provide real-time custodial support during events, ensuring spaces remain clean, safe, and responsive to participant needs.

    • Serve as a work lead by coordinating daily custodial assignments across varied environments with competing priorities.

    • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with custodial, sanitation, and presentation standards across all facility types.

    • Assist with onboarding and training of new employees on procedures, safety protocols, and expectations for both academic and public-facing spaces.

    • Coordinate coverage and communicate staffing or operational gaps due to absences, events, or fluctuating building usage.

    • Provide backup operational leadership in the absence of a Custodian III or supervisor.

  • Equipment Maintenance & Operational Readiness – 2%

    • Inspect, troubleshoot, and perform minor maintenance on custodial equipment to support operations across multiple facility types.

    • Maintain chemical dilution systems and ensure proper functionality, particularly in environments with specialized sanitation needs (labs, dining areas).

    • Identify equipment issues and escalate repair needs to ensure minimal disruption to cleaning operations.

  • Seasonal Support & Emergency Response – 1%

    • Perform snow removal, ice mitigation, and exterior safety support for academic buildings, residence-adjacent areas, and high-traffic public entrances.

    • Respond as essential personnel to emergencies, weather events, and urgent operational needs impacting campus safety and continuity.

    • May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on operational needs.

  • Professional Development & Additional Duties – 2%

    • Participate in required safety, custodial, and specialized training (including lab safety and sanitation practices where applicable).

    • Apply training to improve efficiency, safety compliance, and service quality across varied campus environments.

    • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance customer experience and operational effectiveness within Facilities Services.

    • Perform other duties as assigned to support Facilities Services operations.

Qualifications 
  • To be considered for this role, you must possess the ability to perform custodial cleaning, sanitation, and facility support work across varied environments such as academic spaces, public-use facilities, and/or similar commercial settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate custodial equipment and safely use cleaning chemicals in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, environmental health standards, and workplace safety practices is required.
  • Experience supporting building operations in environments with varying levels of use and complexity, including the ability to prioritize work based on schedules, occupancy, events, or customer needs, is required.
  • Experience identifying facility maintenance or safety concerns and communicating effectively with supervisors or maintenance teams to support timely resolution is required.
  • Experience providing work guidance, training, or informal leadership to others in a team-based environment is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with specialized cleaning considerations in environments such as research laboratories, food service areas, or other regulated spaces is highly desirable.
  • To be considered for this role you must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. 
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Required to report to campus within designated timeframe for essential operations.
