Duties and Responsibilities 

• *Serve as a Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) and will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive health and safety programs for all JABSOM Departments, units, and operations.
• *Develop, implement, coordinate, and maintain a range of health and safety programs, including occupational and environmental health, biological safety, hazardous materials management (HMMP), and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) compliance. This includes oversight of the JABSOM Chemistry Stockroom.
• *Conduct and oversee health and safety inspections of JABSOM facilities to evaluate compliance, identify risks, and prepare written reports of findings. Conduct follow-up activities to ensure deficiencies are corrected.
• *Investigate accidents and near-miss incidents to identify causes of injuries or illnesses, recommend corrective actions, and maintain relevant accident statistics.
• *Develop, conduct, and schedule training classes to cover emergency procedures, workplace safety, and other relevant topics.
• *Assist with respirator fit-testing for JABSOM staff, researchers and students.
• *Implement and coordinate emergency response plans for JABSOM facilities and operations.
• *Serve as a liaison between JABSOM units and agencies such as the UH Environmental Health & Safety Office (UH EHSO), Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health (HIOSH), the State of Hawaii Department of Health (DOH), and other related groups. Work with contractors and the UH Animal Veterinary Services (AVS) Operations Manager to ensure proper maintenance of equipment and facilities, particularly for the Bio-safety Level 3 Laboratories.
• *Oversee lower-level specialists, students, and clerical personnel.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

• Possession of a baccalaureate degree in basic sciences, occupational health, environmental safety, or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for occupational or environmental health and safety and/or scientific methodology; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
• Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the area of occupational and/or environmental health and safety as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standards and evolving concepts, principles, and methodologies.
• Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories and systems associated with occupational and/ or environmental health and safety.
• Demonstrated ability to resolve wide-ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative, and timely manner.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparing reports and other materials.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders, and members, and individuals.
• Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, Excel, and PowerPoint, and experience with Google Drive management.
• If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
• Experience in an academic, research, or health and safety environment.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities, and handle employee relations.
• Knowledge of safety inspection methods and procedures.
• Knowledge of the practices and procedures of laboratory operations, inherent safety hazards, and the methods for abatement of such hazards.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) or similar software.

Desirable Qualifications 

• Knowledge of the proper use of personal protective equipment, including conducting respirator fit testing of medical students and researchers.
• Experience with a college or university environmental health and safety program.
• Experience with the operations of a Biological Safety Level 3 facility and an animal vivarium.
• Experience with inspection and testing of ventilation systems and environmental testing and sampling methods.
