Summary

The purpose of this classification is to supervise the day-to-day activities and operations involved in providing custodial services to County-owned buildings and facilities.

This will be a second shift position (3pm - 12am) after training has been completed. Training will be on first shift 6am - 3pm and will last approximately 2-3 months. Examples of dutiesSupervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff: develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and management; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures.

Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work: prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate.

Provides custodial duties to county buildings, facilities and parks: vacuums, sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and/or shampoos carpet and floor surfaces located in hallways, stairs, offices, restrooms, kitchens, public rooms, elevators, storage rooms, and other areas.

Cleans, dusts, and polishes furniture, equipment, artwork, fixtures, surfaces, walls, wood paneling, windows, blinds, window sills, trim, doors, cabinets, vents, and other surfaces: and cleans/disinfects telephones, water fountains, and office equipment/supplies.

Cleans, deodorizes and disinfects bathrooms: cleans mirrors; and replenishes soap products and paper products.

Empties trash containers and recycling containers: replaces trash liners in containers; picks up and disposes of trash from floor/ground areas; separates recyclable materials from other trash; carries/transports trash to dumpster or other designated trash receptacle; and cleans trash/recycling containers.

Maintains building security: turns off lights, copiers, calculators, heat switches, and other office equipment not in use; unlocks/locks doors; and disarms/resets security alarm system.

Operates/utilizes various equipment, tools and supplies which may include a vacuum cleaner, carpet cleaner, buffing machine, mop, broom, cleaning supplies, alarm system, ladder, lawn mower, weedeater, leaf blower, snow blower, shovel, rake, drill, saw, or mechanic tools.

Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.

Assists in monitoring inventory levels of equipment, tools, or supplies: initiates requests for new or replacement materials; and stocks or distributes supply items.

Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, timesheets, vacation requests, or other documents; and forwards or retains as appropriate.

Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio: provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages; and responds to requests for service or assistance; may require the ability to communicate, report and complete work orders using technology such as a Smartphone or tablet and associated applications.

May be responsible for purchasing custodial related items; accountable for delivery of related financial paperwork to administrative staff.

Supervises and directs subordinates and is responsible for appraisals, training and disciplinary actions.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by three years of experience in custodial services.

Preferred Qualifications
 
 • Experience operating industrial floor care equipment, including commercial buffers, auto-scrubbers, carpet extractors, and power washers.
 
 • Knowledge of floor care equipment maintenance, including routine inspections and basic daily upkeep.
 
 • Experience performing floor maintenance services, including stripping, waxing, polishing, and refinishing hard-surface floors.
 
 • Ability to follow safety procedures and maintain high standards of cleanliness in commercial or industrial environments.


QualificationsMust possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Supplemental information

Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, or disease.
