Job Description:  Alternative School Vehicle (Van) Driver

Position Overview:

  • Location: Transportation
  • Compensation: Grade 6 of the ESP Salary Scale 
  • Schedule: 6.5 Hours/Day
  • Work Year: 10-Month
  • Reports To: Assistant Supervisor of Transportation

  • Role Overview: This position provides safe and reliable transportation for up to 10 students who are unable to ride a traditional school bus. This position will serve the Foundation School in Montgomery County for the 2026/2027 school year.  Routes, schedules, and assignments may change based on student and program needs. 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Must hold a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Experience: Five (5) years of driving experience, during which time a valid driver's license was held.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 
    • Meet all requirements enumerated in COMAR 13A.06.06.09 (Qualifications and Disqualifications)
    • Valid driver's license with no court-ordered restrictions.
    • Have no more than two current points on driving record and have a satisfactory past driving record.
    • Receive a negative controlled substance pre-employment test.
    • Submit to drug and alcohol testing to include random, post-accident and reasonable suspicion.
    •  Ability to work well with and manage students, including students with special needs.
    • Ability to accommodate route and student changes with minimal notice.
  • Attendance: Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Accommodations: Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Provide acceptable references as to one's ability to work with and supervise students.
  • Demonstrate an aptitude and competence for the position.
  • Experience working with and supporting students with special needs, including managing diverse behavioral, emotional, and physical needs in a safe and respectful manner.
  • Knowledge of Washington County roadways and school locations.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Transport students safely to and from various schools/programs/destinations.
  • Exercise professionalism and always maintain appropriate student management.
  • Obey all traffic laws and observe all safety regulations.
  • Maintain proper use of all safety equipment including the use of special equipment.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when transporting students.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle is clean and in good mechanical condition 
  • Operate the vehicle and follow all policies and procedures as outlined in the WCPS School Bus Driver's Manual.
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Attend all in-service training courses to maintain certification.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and school system policies.
  • Report all accidents immediately and complete the required reports.
  • Maintain accurate records and submit reports, as required.
  • Maintain discipline and report any discipline issues to proper authority.
  • Demonstrate a courteous and professional demeanor to all stakeholders of Washington County Public Schools.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

  • Working Conditions: Will be subjected to loud noises, community traffic conditions, hot and cold outdoor temperatures, and weather-related conditions.
