Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a Master's degree, a Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and one (1) year of full-time experience in a college or university setting in student services related areas such as: advising, counseling, teaching, and/or student programming/activities (related student work experience may be considered).
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling, or a related discipline. Academic advising experience in a college or university setting. Experience teaching new student seminars or student-development related courses. Experience conducting presentations including facilitating discussions. Experience coordinating programs and/or events. Experience interacting with a diverse student population in an academic environment.
Brief Description of Duties:
The CEAS Academic Advisor provides individual academic advising to SBU students. Reporting to a member of the USO management team, the incumbent is an active leader and participant in assisting with the orientation and registration process, planning activities and events throughout the year, developing and implementing advising strategies for academic success for all students, and building connections with faculty, staff, and student constituents. In addition, the incumbent teaches the Introduction to Stony Brook seminar course. This position provides a significant link to students’ transition to SBU with the goal to strengthen student engagement and retention. The incumbent must possess: outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Duties:
Academic Advisement:
Provide high quality, pro-active academic advising in individual and group settings on an ongoing basis throughout the students SBU career, including regular communication about courses, majors, degree requirements, and policies and procedures.
Monitor course enrollment and academic progress.
Active support, follow-up and success strategies to undergraduate students.
Serve as a general walk-in academic advisor as needed.
Support and contribute to special projects that advance divisional priorities, including student retention, persistence, and academic success initiatives.
Programs and Event Planning:
Serve as the primary point of contact for non-CEAS students interested in pursuing CEAS programs. Track student progress, advise on major admission requirements and advocate to support students’ timely major admission and graduation.
Serve as the primary link between CEAS advising and Division of Undergraduate Education for CEAS students now pursuing degree programs outside of CEAS. Track student progress, connect with general advising and departmental staff and support student’s timely major admission and graduation.
Participate in the initiation, planning, and execution of events and activities designed to build community and enhance the undergraduate student experience aligned with institutional goals and student success outcomes.
Coordinate programming initiatives, including logistics, scheduling, communications, and collaboration with campus departments and stakeholders. Analyze and assess the effectiveness of programs and initiatives, providing recommendations for continuous improvement.
Assist with administrative tasks for programming, special initiatives, etc.
Represent the CEAS/University at various programs and events including Admissions open houses/receptions and Admitted Students events. Some nights and weekends required.
Participate in various divisional and university programs and services, including campus events, special events, divisional committees, and university-wide committees.
New Student Seminar Instruction:
Participate in relevant training and provide instruction for new student seminar classes each semester, focusing on sections targeted to CEAS students.
Supervise, train, and evaluate an assigned teaching assistant.
Orientation and Registration:
Assist in the coordination and implementation of orientation sessions.
Coordinate the registration of new students. Collaborate with the Registrar, New Student Programs office, and all specialized advising programs in registering new students.
Participate in the planning of new student orientation and opening week programs including the development, planning, and implementation of various activities.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
