The mission of the Fleet Management Department is to provide the City of Houston with best value, fleet management services. To accomplish Fleet's mission and our vision of being recognized as the best managed fleet in the country, we are actively seeking a MECHANIC II who thrives in performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs of moderate complexity to City vehicles and equipment. The Mechanic II is a Tier 1 position and can make an immediate impact and add value towards the achievement of these goals.


The MECHANIC II duties will include but is not limited to:

  • The Fleet Management Department is seeking candidates to perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs of moderate complexity to City vehicles and equipment. Maintains and repairs Light Duty or Heavy-Duty and Off-Road mechanical equipment parts and components. 

  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance activities related services to various types of vehicular equipment but not limited to oil and filter changes, servicing of lubricant and fluid levels, component wear inspection, and systems testing. Repairs, replaces, rebuilds failed vehicle and equipment components of moderate complexity.  

  • Perform minor overhauls services vehicle components on manual transmissions, gas and diesel engines, air brakes, suspension, exhaust, fuel, cooling, air conditioning systems. electrical systems and vehicle component repairs.

  • Keeps track of repair time and reports time on work orders. Orders parts and updates/completes work orders according to standard operating procedures

  • Performs vehicle body and paint repairs of moderate complexity as well as component upfit and make ready. 

  • Repairs include but are not limited to body panel shaping, substrate preparation, painting, metal and fiberglass fabrication, welding, body filler application and component replacement.

  • Services vehicles and equipment as needed at garages and at off-site locations.

  • Uses tools and equipment such as electronic diagnostic scanners, mechanical equipment, tire changers, bench grinders, pressure washers, alignment machines, lifts, hoists, jacks, overhead cranes and a variety of hand power tools and technical service manuals. Stays current on new technology.  

  • Performs Good Housekeeping duties. Observes work environmental and hazardous material procedures maintains a clean and safe work environment. Follows all safety policy and procedures and work safely.   Must furnish own hand tools and  personal Safety Shoes.

WORKING CONDITIONS

There is routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts bruises and minor burns. The position may require occasional periods of stooping, bending and/or lifting of materials up to 80 pounds.  


This is a Fleet Management Department Position at the Tier I Level. Examples of duties

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS


High school degree of GED equivalent.


LICENSE REQUIREMENTS


Driver’s License Requirement: Valid Texas Class C upon hire. 
Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6-months of employment. 
Must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving. 
Required Certifications: Must achieve certification as Texas State Vehicle Inspector within 6 months of employment. 
May be required to achieve Emergency Vehicle Technician certification.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Two years’ experience of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair with at least one year as a skilled mechanic experience is required 

OR 

Two years of full-time, secondary vocational education in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment (off road) technology.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. **
