The Hydrocarbons & New Energies team within Energy Sector Coverage offers an exciting front office position in Amsterdam for an ambitious professional who enjoys working in an international environment. In this position you actively contribute to driving the energy transition through financial solutions.
The Energy Sector Coverage team is one of the global specialist sector coverage teams and sits at the heart of ING Wholesale Banking. We provide banking services including complex financial solutions to Energy clients in the EMEA region, the Americas and in Asia-Pacific. From Amsterdam you will cover the North-West Europe (especially the Netherlands, UK and Scandinavian countries) as well as provide support to other EMEA Energy teams. Occasionally you may be involved with clients and/or transactions in Africa and the Middle East.
The Hydrocarbons & New Energies team covers the “molecule side” of the energy sector. We cover the full spectrum of oil and gas (O&G) exploration and production companies to the Energy infrastructure space, storage, refineries, base chemical producers and related service providers. Although the sector is still dominated by fossil hydrocarbons as feedstock for fuels and materials, clients and prospects are developing technologies and solutions to diversify away from the traditional oil & gas based business models.
Changing client strategies requires a similar change from ING to remain relevant. We see this as a great opportunity that lies ahead of us. We want to support clients that recognize the need to change their business model into sustainable solutions such as biogas/biomethane, hydrogen/ammonia, methanol, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and other e-fuels and biofuels . Carbon capture, transport and storage (CCUS) solutions are another important area where we want to expand. The team is investing significant time and effort in helping develop these New Energies with tangible results to which we expect you to further contribute.
As an Associate, you will support and work closely with PAMs and/ or Deal Principals (DPs) and play an important role to (i) manage ING’s multi-product relationships with international clients in this fast changing dynamic sector, (ii) originate and structure financial solutions whilst (iii) actively increasing ING’s commitment into New Energies in line with ING’s strategy.
Job description
As an Associate, you contribute to the origination efforts of the Energy team, working closely with various product specialists across ING, Transaction Management and Portfolio Management. The role also involved regular contact with clients, other banks, technical and legal advisors. In all your activities you will strive to meet client needs in the best way. Activities will be diverse, but your main tasks consist of:
- Contribute to formulating client strategies; contribute to building and managing client relationships
- Support PAMs and DP with preparing presentations, pitch books and sector analyses.
- Analysis of different transaction structures and structuring recommendations on the basis of company nature, financials and forecasts
- Preparing business comparables, analysis of debt structures, performance metrics and debt pricing
- Assessing and reviewing transaction and client due diligence (together with the team)
- Safeguarding timely transaction delivery including the coordination with Transaction management and Risk Management
- Coordinating delivery of ING’s product suite through active contacts with other departments within ING such as Sustainable Finance, Financial Markets, Energy Project Advisory, Capital Structuring & Advisory, Debt Capital Markets, Transaction Services, Corporate Finance and Loan Distribution Group
- Contributing to achieving sector income, fee, cross-buy, ESG and return targets, and other financial / non-financial KPIs, participating in relevant projects
- Keeping up to speed with latest sector developments

Working in the Hydrocarbons & New Energies team means working in a dynamic environment with demanding, market leading clients. Due to the complexity of the assignments and the international nature of your work, your personal development curve will be steep. The Energy Sector coverage team in Amsterdam consists of c.30 FTE of which 12 FTE in the Hydrocarbons & New Energies team. While globally, Energy Sector Coverage consists of c. 130 dedicated professionals located in main hubs New York, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Brussels and Singapore with smaller teams in countries across Europe. In your role you will report into the Head of Hydrocarbons & New Energies NL based in Amsterdam.
Who are we looking for
We are looking for an ambitious pro-active professional with a positive attitude and strong commercial drive.
- Ambitious professional with a Masters’ degree; An engineering degree would be a plus (e.g. Product and Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Complex Systems Engineering)
- Circa 1-5 years of working experience (experienced analyst or starting associate)
- Relationship-driven and people-oriented mindset, embracing diversity and cross-cultural awareness
- Curious and strong team player with good communication skills
- Experience with corporate or project finance
- Strong financial modelling & analytical skills, eye for detail
- Affinity with, or experience in the Energy sector
- Fluent in English, both verbally and written
