TITLE: Elementary ESOL Teacher (Pre-K/K Focus) - Rowe Elementary

 

POSITION OVERVIEW: 

ESOL Teachers in Portland Public Schools:

  • Provide and support rigorous and appropriate English language instruction aligned with the WIDA English Language Proficiency & Standards and the Common Core to meet grade level expectations for MLs/DLLs, including newcomers
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to enhance acquisition of English in all language domains necessary to participate and make progress in general education content classes
  • Provide on-going staff development on language acquisition, acculturation, sheltered instruction, and effective practices in teaching MLs/DLLs
  • Use school and student level data to inform instruction and programming supports for MLs/DLLs.

Our ESOL teachers are expected to be culturally responsive and effective communicators with students, parents, and staff.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide and support early English language development opportunities and instruction aligned with WIDA English Language Development Standards
  • Collaborate with teachers to build capacity in facilitating the development of English in all language domains and to maximize student participation and progress in the classroom
  • Provide ongoing professional learning opportunities as necessary on dual language development, acculturation and effective practices in teaching multilingual learners
  • Use student data and language proficiency assessments to inform instruction and programming support for multilingual students
  • Assist educational teams in distinguishing English language acquisition from a language based disability, as well as providing ongoing information on cultural norms in relation to reports of behavioral concerns for students
  • Promote family and parent communication and engagement
  • Work collaboratively with Teachers, Administrators, Multilingual Parent and Community Specialists, and other district staff including Multilingual Intake team as neede

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
  • Understanding of the teaching/learning process for multilingual students
  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education
  • Ability to use student data and language proficiency assessment results to inform classroom instruction and programing for multilingual students
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with administrators, colleagues, students, parents and community members

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university

 

REQUIRED CREDENTIALS:

  • Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info)
  • Maine State Teacher certification with 660 endorsement (ESOL, PK-12) (more info)

 

PREFERRED CREDENTIALS:

  • Maine State teaching certification with one of the following age-appropriate endorsements:
    • 081 Early Childhood Teacher  (0-K)
    • 282 Students with Disabilities (0-K)
    • 020 General Elementary Teacher (K-6 or K-8)
  • Fluency in language(s) other than English

 

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

  • Schedule: School Year, Full Time (1.0 FTE)
  • Assignment: Permanent
  • Reports to: School Principal
  • Contract: Part of PEA union (see 2025-2028 CBA here)
  • Salary: Based on education and experience, as outlined in CBA

Located in beautiful Portland, ME, Amanda C. Rowe elementary is a vibrant Pre-K through 5th grade school serving approximately 475 students. Our incredible staff and students make Rowe a truly special place to learn and grow. Housed in a beautiful, modern facility built in 2018, we provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child is supported on their educational journey. 

 

We are proud to be a diverse learning community, with approximately 21% of our students identifying as multilingual learners. Our robust ESOL team works collaboratively to ensure all students are engaged and successful. Around 20% of our students access special education services, and Rowe is home to the district's specialized Breathe Program, which supports students with behavioral and social-emotional needs in meeting their goals at school. Our dedicated special education team and support staff are truly exceptional, providing compassionate, individualized support that helps every student thrive.
